Working as part of your team

I am a website developer with over 25 years experience. I specialise in bespoke website development. Projects include membership websites, integration with third party back-office systems or customised ecommerce solutions. I have created work management and planning systems for clients, that are not public websites - but are based on web technologies.

Broad skills bring value

I believe that one of my greatest values to you is my ability to work on both front-end design and development - and back-end. I can happily take a designer's artwork (as an electronic file - or just a mockup) and create a working online version. Likewise I can write the back-end custom CMS required to give the client the exact control they need over the website - and integrate it with other systems as needed.

I'm listing my skills below - but as you know - its the experience, projects and previous work that speaks volumes.

Skills

  • PHP
  • Laravel - incl Blade, Tailwind, Alpine, Livewire and Flux
  • Figma design tool and design systems
  • Javascript (and jQuery for legacy sites)
  • MySQL database management
  • HTML & CSS
  • Foundation framework
  • Web hosting security and configuration
  • Some previous experience with:
    • Node.js
    • Express
    • Websockets.io

BM Logistics
www.bmlogistics.co.uk

A small business marketing website for a local transport firm. The team at BM Logistics realised that their current website was selling them short when compared to their competitors. So I extended my usual skillset and included photography for this lock-down project.

The website design also includes use of CSS functionality to animate the logo - tastefully - across mobile and desktop viewing.

The European Association for Cancer Research
www.eacr.org

A membership website where the publicly viewable website is only a small part of the site. There is a significant membership area - and an even larger admin system.

  • Self-management for members
  • Renewal system linked to Stripe payment gateway for complex renewal schedules and rates
  • Also links with Intuit Quickbooks with complex multi-jurisdiction tax invoices
  • Event booking
  • Detailed system for their own events - including speaker listing, abstract submission and programme production
  • On screen reports including dynamic graphs
  • Import and Export of data

With expertise in creating systems where off-the-shelf packages just don't meet customer requirements, I have the experience to find a solution to your needs.

Some examples of previous projects and integrations are shown, but they include:

  • Payment gateways (Stripe)
  • CRM systems (Infusionsoft and bespoke)
  • SMS gateways (for sending - and crucially receiving - text messages)
  • RAW data import and export (CSV, XLS etc)

Typical development environment

  • JetBrains IDE - PHPStorm
  • Safari & Chrome
  • Mac Studio installed with MAMP Pro
  • Navicat database management
  • Omnifocus, NotePlan, Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma
  • Black coffee and Green tea

Universal Construction

Started as an experiment in an online application process - but quickly developed into a system for storing details on thousands of sub-contract staff.

Then went on to include work planning. This was particularly complex due to a heavily regulated rail industry. When adding staff into the weekly plan - they can only work a certain number of hours in any period; they have to have a certain number of rest days; their working day hours needs to include travel time to and from site etc. The system works all this out and highlights any possibly breaches of regulation to be checked further.

I have the full suite of software required and run my own Mac Studio Max and MacBook Air. I also have my own dedicated webserver if you need a live development environment - or hosting for your clients.

For IR35 purposes I operate as a limited company and take care of the NICs and tax responsibilities.

Ivanhoe School
www.ivanhoe.co.uk

An academy website for a school within a multi-academy trust. I work with several of the schools in this MAT - and several other MATs. This school underwent a major rebrand with an agency and had extensive brand-guidelines developed with resources.

These resources were used to create a brand-new website for the academy - with features and design that echoed what was happening in the print and on-site messaging.
